Acoustic Simulation for IEMs
IEM-focused acoustic simulation: lumped models, FEM/BEM, magnetic simulation and the measurements needed to keep every model honest.
23.1 Lumped acoustic models
A lumped model can estimate cavity volume, bore, vent and damper effects quickly. It gives direction early but does not replace a finished measurement.
23.2 FEM and BEM for complex geometry
FEM or BEM can explore waveguides, shell shapes and resonances where simple tube assumptions fail. Their output depends on correct boundaries, materials and mesh quality.
23.3 Magnetic-circuit simulation
Field models compare gap flux and steel paths before expensive tooling. They must later be checked against real components.
23.4 Model validation with prototypes
Measure a prototype, compare it with the prediction, identify the failed assumption and update the model. Simulation is valuable when it shortens experiments.
23.5 Selecting the right tool
Use modelling when physical changes are costly or slow; use a quick build when it answers the question faster.
23.6 Simulation tool selection
Use simple acoustic networks for quick tuning choices, FEM/BEM for complex geometry and magnetic solvers for motor decisions. Select the tool by question, not fashion.
